Matthew Smith is a native of Houston, TX and began his career in education as a teacher with the Aldine Independent School District in north Houston. He served as a secondary school principal in the Livingston and San Angelo School Districts before accepting the principal position of North High in Des Moines in 2010.
After leading North High school for three years, he served as Executive Director of Learning Services and Family Supports before being promoted to Chief Schools Officer in 2014. In July of 2018 he was promoted to the position of Associate Superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools and continues today in that capacity. Smith earned a BS in secondary education from Baylor University and a M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from Sam Houston University. He is married to his lovely wife Meredith of 20 years and is the very proud father of four exceptionally gifted children.
