After 50 years to the day on Iowa radio, including 35 as Program Director and Morning host on WHO Radio, Van retired several years ago. His hallmark has been novelty, creativity and "attention getting" work. Under Van's leadership WHO Radio earned 13 national Marconi Awards, 5 of which were awarded to him personally as radio personality of the year. The Marconi is the radio equivalent of the Oscar or Emmy. He was inducted into the Iowa Broadcast Hall of Fame a few years ago, and received the Presidential Volunteerism award from then President George W. Bush. Van has written several books and created two inventions. He continues to write, does a lot of speaking and has been an adult Bible teacher for over 45 years. He and his wife Becky live in the house where he was born and raised in Adel, Iowa.
